Olive trees can grow in well drained poor nutrient soils. They need full sun for fruit production and temperatures that do not fall below -5ºC (for fruiting). They also need an annual rainfall of around 300mm.
For an intensive farm for full olive production it is not unusual to see 200- 300 trees planted per hectare. But for a stunning centrepiece in a domestic garden a single twisted and gnarled millennium tree looks statuesque and individual.
